Covid-19 general information

What to know if you need to have a Covid-19 test

If you need to test for Covid-19:

  • Please go straight home and register for a RAT Test. You can order the test kits from the website requestrats.covid19.health.nz or by ringing 0800 222 478 (option 3) from 8am to 8pm.
  • If you do a test at home, record your result (positive or negative) in My Covid Record, or ring 0800 222 478 for help. A positive PCR test result will be recorded for you and you will receive a text message from the official 2328 or 2648 number.
  • The isolation period for Covid-19 cases is at least 7 days from your last exposure. If you still have symptoms after 7 days, you should stay home until your symptoms have been gone for 24 hours. You no longer need a test to leave isolation.
  • When someone in a household tests positive, everyone who lives with them must also self-isolate and take a test on Day 3 and Day 7 of the first case’s isolation. They can end their self-isolation on the same day as the first case in the household, provided they have no new or worsening symptoms and their tests are negative. If someone in the house tests positive, they will need to restart their 7 days, but the rest of the house can end their isolation.
  • You may be considered a close non-household contacts if you live in the same group accommodation as the person with Covid-19 (eg. aged residential care facilities, halls of residences, boarding houses or transitional housing) or have spent a day or night with the infected person during their infectious period. Other contacts through work or other locations should self-monitor for 10 days.
  • With the Omicron variant, most people will have a mild to moderate illness. If you become seriously unwell, please ring your local healthcare provider or Healthline on 0800 358 5453, or 111 if you have breathing difficulties.
  • Contact the Covid-19 welfare support line (0800 512 337, 7 days a week) if you need help with kai or other welfare support.
  • For more information go to the Ministry of Health website
