Being a responsible dog owner this summer

We’re big fans of seeing happy dogs out walking and wagging their tails. We just encourage everyone in our community to keep dogs on a leash, unless they’re at one of our off-leash dog parks. These wide open spaces are designed for dogs to exercise and make new friends.

Check them out at the following locations.

  • Greytown Dog Park – on the old railway shed land on the corners of Cotter and Pierce streets, at the Greytown end of the Greytown to Woodside Trail walk.
  • Martinborough Dog Park – on the corner of Weld and Robert streets, about a 10 minute walk from Union Square in Martinborough.
  • Featherston Dog Park – on the corner of Johnston Street and Harrison Street West, near to Featherston Railway Station.

The purpose of on leash laws under the Dog Control Act 1996 is to protect people’s safety, prevent nuisance and ensure responsible dog ownership. The on-leash laws require owners to keep dogs under control in public places. By doing this you…

  • Reduce risks of injury to people, intimidation or damage.
  • Reduce the likelihood of dogs getting lost, injured or involved in a dangerous situation.
  • Prevent damage to our fragile ecosystems, such as rivers, beaches and parks, as well as wildlife living in these places.
