Community members invited to help shape access and safety in Martinborough

South Wairarapa District Council is wanting to hear from Martinborough residents interested in joining the newly established Martinborough Access Reference Group (MARG).

The group is intended to provide advice and recommendations on important roading, walking and cycling access related issues affecting Martinborough, with a particular focus on safety, accessibility, and the impacts of visitor and freight traffic that are particularly complex in and around Martinborough.

Deputy Mayor and Martinborough Councillor Rob Taylor says the group will ensure local voices help shape future decisions. “Martinborough is a growing town with a unique character. We are experiencing increased pressure on our roads, footpaths, parks and reserves as population growth, tourism and freight activity intensifies. Heavy vehicle routes, pedestrian and cycling safety, and the function and future of the town centre are among the complex and interconnected challenges facing the community.”

Councillor Taylor said the group would help Council navigate these challenges thoughtfully. “These are not simple issues with one-size-fits-all solutions. By working alongside the community, which is rich with experience, we can explore options and make better informed decisions that balance safety, accessibility, economic vitality and the character of Martinborough.”

Council is seeking expressions of interest for volunteers from Martinborough ward residents with experience or knowledge across a range of areas, including:

  • urban design
  • roading and bridges
  • the Martinborough economy, including retail, wine, tourism and events
  • industries requiring heavy transport and transport routes
  • traffic, pedestrian and cyclist behaviour and safety
  • community, environmental or planning perspectives
  • any other knowledge considered relevant

The group is expected to meet regularly between March and August 2026, with its work able to feed into Council’s Long-Term Plan development and wider transport and access planning.

“You don’t need to be a technical expert to apply,” shares Councillor Taylor. “We’re looking for people who care about Martinborough and want to contribute constructively to its future.”

“If this format proves successful, we’ll look to establish reference groups for our other wards to support their local issues.”

Expressions of interest are now open and close 25 February. To find out more or apply, visit swdc.govt.nz/martinborough-access-reference-group/
