South Wairarapa District Council is delighted to invite sports minded groups and individuals to put their best foot forward with an Expression of Interest to spearhead transformational change in people’s lives by developing a new Sports and Recreation Service.
The funding and development of a South Wairarapa Sports and Recreation Service grew from a long-term desire in the community to see positive change in people’s lives, driven by sports and recreation, which culminated in a survey conducted by the Council in November 2024. Results of the survey showed strong support for a new service and funding was approved in the Council’s Long-Term Plan in June this year for $161,200 to be spread across two years on a pro-rata basis.
“This new Sports and Recreation Service is a way for the Council to support our sports and recreation community so they don’t have to spend so much time worrying about the future of their clubs,” says Councillor Rebecca Gray, who says the two year funding will ensure there is time to develop and embed the service across the district.
The successful applicant’s Expression of Interest will propose how they will develop high quality, accessible, district-wide participation in sports and recreation. The intention is to for sports and recreation to drive positive change across the South Wairarapa district, both now and into the future.
Successful applicants will demonstrate their commitment to Te Tiriti of Waitangi through Kaupapa Māori values to work in genuine partnership with tangata whenua to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
Expressions of Interest for the Sports and Recreation Shared Service open on Monday 14 July and close on Monday 11 August. More information can be found at swdc.govt.nz/community/sports-and-recreation
