South Wairarapa District Council wants to hear your ideas to develop and build the economy with the support of a new Economic Development Fund, which opens for applications on Tuesday 3 February.
The fund was set up late last year with a one-off pool of $180,000 for the 2025/26 financial year, which will be overseen by the Council’s Economic Growth Committee.
“This fund is design to kick start new or enhance existing initiatives among our communities of the South Wairarapa. This is to attract investment and visitor spend from outside the region to assist our local economy” says Committee Chair, Councillor Chris Archer.
Applicants can seek funding from tiers ranging from seed funding of up to $2,000 through to a transformative investment of $25,000 or more. Those applying for larger amounts will be required to demonstrate stronger reporting and governance structures in their funding applications.
Educative drop-in sessions will be hosted by the Council in February and March. Full details of these will be posted on the Council’s website and social media channels.
The Economic Development Fund is open to individuals, businesses, community groups, marae, schools and registered charities to apply to. Applications will be assessed on criteria focussing on economic sustainability, developing the district as a destination and celebrating its natural, built and cultural heritage.
The purpose of the fund is to strengthen the economy, heritage and vibrancy of South Wairarapa but applicants outside the district may also apply by outlining clear and measurable benefits to local communities.
If you have an idea that fits the criteria, put an application in and don’t miss out on this one-off opportunity.
Application open dates
The Economic Development Fund opens on Tuesday 3 February and closes on Monday 2 March 2026.
All projects that benefit from the fund must be completed by 31 March 2027.
