South Wairarapa’s wheels park — officially named Te Papa Ora o Mōroa — is to open two months ahead of schedule on Monday 20 October and locals are invited to dust off their helmets and enjoy the ride.
This vibrant new space opens in Greytown this month as a hub for skaters, scooters, BMX riders and families alike, bringing fresh energy to South Wairarapa.
The park, located at 4–6 Pierce Street, was designed and engineered by Convic, a design and engineering company with over 800 ground breaking park designs completed around the world – and the completion of this project ahead of schedule for the Council.
Phase one of Te Papa Ora o Mōroa – named Papa Ora, for short – has been funded as part of the South Wairarapa District Council’s Long-Term Plan.
“This wheels park has been in the works for such a long time, it’s been an honour to have had some part in bringing it to fruition. I’m buzzing that the rangatahi and skating community of the South Wairarapa will have a destination park on their doorstep,” says Melissa Stockley, Community Operations Acting Manager, reflecting on the approximately two-decade journey to bring Papa Ora to life.
“Construction kicked off in late July and is to open early, thanks to the hard mahi and strong talent at Convic; the swift responsiveness, hard work and high-quality concrete from Gray Brothers (contractors) the Council and community support,” says Stockley.
And there is more. Future plans for Papa Ora include a basketball court, playground and pump track. Fundraising for these additions are planned to be a community initiative.
An official opening party is planned for Saturday 15 November – watch the Council’s website for details.
