Council launches trial to combat wind strewn recycling

Windy days may be a fact of life in the South Wairarapa but help is now at hand to prevent the contents of our recycling bins from spilling out and blowing around the community, thanks to a nifty new clip that fits securely on the lids of yellow topped recycling bins.

South Wairarapa District Council is launching a new trial to test a second bin clip designed to keep the lids of recycling bins firmly shut, even when the bins take a tumble in the wind.

The trial will determine how well the clips work at keeping the lids closed while still allowing them to release when the truck collects and tips the bins.

If the trial proves to be successful, the Council will look at providing the clips to all households with yellow lidded bins.

We know our residents work hard to clean and sort their recycling and this trial is about protecting that effort to keep our environment clean.

The Council is also exploring solutions for coastal areas where crates rather than bins are used for recycling.

We can’t stop the wind but we do hope to stop your recycling from becoming litter.

This trial is paid for using waste levy funds.
