Be prepared for Tropical Cyclone Vaianu

MetService New Zealand is tracking Tropical Cyclone Vaianu, which is forecast to bring severe wind and rain to Aotearoa over the weekend.

We’ll share updates as more information is made available about the situation, but for now, please take time to get prepared.

Prepare your home, whānau, and property:

  • Make a plan for your whānau and pets
  • Bring loose items inside and tie down trampolines (turn them upside down)
  • Clear branches, firewood, and debris from around your property
  • Clear leaves and rubbish from drains
  • Move livestock to safe, sheltered areas
  • Check on neighbours who may need help

Be ready to move if needed:

  • Be ready to self-evacuate during daylight if you live near waterways or in isolated areas
  • If you’ve been isolated before and don’t want to be again, consider coming into town early and staying with friends or family

Stay safe during bad weather:

  • The more severe weather is expected on Sunday – make sure you have enough food and medication for a week, in case you are isolated
  • Trees may come down and block roads. Stay clear of trees during the storm
  • Be ready with torches and a battery or solar radio

Stay informed:

  • Tune in to The Breeze FM (99.1FM from Eketahuna to Pirinoa, and 99.9FM for Castlepoint and Riversdale) or RNZ (101.5FM / 567AM)
