Featherston and Greytown are the next places in South Wairarapa to have lower speed limits implemented over the next week on some of their peri-urban roads in a phased roll out of lower speeds across the district this year.
The lower speeds are the next phase of South Wairarapa District Council’s Speed Management Plan, which is designed to improve safety for people across the district. The Plan was approved by the Director of Land Transport in November 2025 and is being progressively rolled out across the district throughout this year, with a focus on roads where there is a higher potential safety risk.
Peri-urban roads wind their way around the perimeter of urban areas and require lower speeds in some places as they have potentially higher numbers of cyclists and walkers.
The first phase saw schools across the district have variable speed limits implemented before and after school bell times, in January this year, with new signage to support the changes. The variable speeds help to protect students and families during busy times of day.
This work was followed by lower speeds implemented on some peri-urban roads in Martinborough in March.
For maps and full details of roads to have lower speeds implemented in Featherston and Greytown over the next week, these are published on the Council’s website at South Wairarapa District Speed Changes 2026 – SWDC.
