Temporary changes to waste collections for Ngawi

Due to the current 3.5‑tonne weight restriction on the Hurupi Stream bridge (also known as the banana bridge) into Ngawi, we need to make temporary changes to how kerbside rubbish and recycling are collected. These changes are essential to ensure waste continues to be removed safely while protecting the integrity of the bridge during repair work.

These changes are temporary and will remain in place only until the bridge’s weight limit is increased, and normal collection vehicles can safely return.

We appreciate the community’s cooperation and understanding as we work to maintain essential services while ensuring public and staff safety.

What’s changing

  • Kerbside rubbish will continue to be collected on Mondays using a smaller truck towing a bin, ensuring we stay within the weight limit.
  • Kerbside recycling will also be collected using a smaller vehicle.
  • The yellow pod service is unable to be emptied so please refrain from leaving items nearby as they will likely blow into the sea. The pod’s weight exceeds current bridge limits.

Temporary removal of visitor wheelie bins

To avoid health and safety risks for staff who would be required to manually lift full wheelie bins without the usual automated truck, we will temporarily remove the block of wheelie bins in Ngawi.

Other disposal options

The Martinborough transfer station remains open as usual, and residents can take waste there if needed.
