Over the Fence

Strengthen your street with closer connections

Neighbours can be great friends, allies and help us to forge safer communities and Councils across the motu have been encouraging closer connections this year with an initiative called Over the Fence.

By hosting an Over the Fence Cuppa with one of your neighbours, you are taking a proactive step towards building a resilient, connected neighbourhood.

Getting to know our neighbours is a way to tap into those who can be our closest allies in good times and when the going gets tough, such as an unexpected community emergency situation. This could be a storm, devastating wind event or cyclone – or even if you’re heading out of town for a few days and could do with someone to keep a close eye on your home.

The idea is for us all to take the first step and invite a neighbour over for a cup of tea, coffee, chat or even a meal. It’s easy to organise and forge new friendships with a friendly chat with your neighbour, either over the fence or by inviting people to share a cuppa and a chat, which could be outside on the berm (footpath), in one of your gardens, homes or at a local park.

Be the spark that connects your neighbourhood

Are you community minded and ready to make a difference? South Wairarapa District Council invites you to host an Over the Fence Cuppa with your neighbours and bring your street together. From emergency preparedness to everyday connection, these events build the networks that matter most. All you need is a willingness to connect.

Over the Fence was launched as part of the annual campaign, Neighbours Aotearoa, but the concept of connecting with neighbours is an essential part of our daily lives, year round, every year.

He waka eke noa. We’re all in this together.
