Level crossing upgrade – project completion
Between 20 January and 22 January, Kiwirail will be completing works of the Fitzherbert St level
crossing. Work will begin at 4am on Saturday 20 January and finish at 4.30pm on Monday 22 January.
This work is part of a capacity upgrade programme designed to support more passenger services for Wairarapa commuters in the coming years. You can read about the work KiwiRail are doing in the Wellington region at kiwirail.co.nz/our-network/our-regions/wellington.
- While works will occur 24/7, during the daytime (8am to 8pm), only the Southbound lane will be closed and a detour will be in place. Northbound vehicles will still be able to drive over the level crossing.
- At night (8pm to 8am), a full road closure of SH2 will be in place at the level crossing.
- Vehicles will be able to access the car park next to Lang’s Pharmacy at all times.
- Some of the work will be noisy, including beeping trucks as they reverse. There will also be use of temporary lighting while they work at night.
- The footpath will remain open for pedestrian use.
Additional works post Anniversary weekend
Also, from 23 January until early March, there will be safety upgrades to the pedestrian crossing at Fitzherbert St.
