Level crossing upgrade
Between 4 January and 8 January, Kiwirail will be upgrading the Fitzherbert St level
crossing. Work will begin at midnight 4 January and finish in the early hours of 8 January.
The work will address the current state of the crossing surface and upgrade it to
support more train services running on the line in the coming years.
- Work will occur 24/7 to get the job done.
- Cranes and trucks will be used. Some of the work will be noisy, including beeping
trucks as they reverse. Temporary lighting will also be used throughout the night works. - Both vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be diverted (via SH53) during this time, and the bus
stops near Quinwah Takeaways will be temporarily moved. Please follow signs
and instructions. - There will be some impacts on water for surrounding properties – see more below.

Water impacts
Wellington Water have advised that throughout the rail upgrade works, the properties in Featherston on the south-eastern side of the railway lines may notice a reduction in water pressure and flow.
The hydrant outside 32 Fitzherbert Street (Mobil Service Station) will also be unavailable for use between the 4th to 8th January as the water main will be isolated.
