Metlink is introducing Snapper as an electronic payment method across the Metlink rail network during November 2022. Paying train fares with Snapper is cheaper, faster and easier than using cash or paper tickets.
Snapper cards can be used on the Wairarapa Line from 27 November 2022.
Get ready to train with Snapper by following these simple steps:
- Purchasing a Snapper card from the online Snapper Store or in-store at your nearest Snapper retailer. Snapper and Total Mobility cards used on bus are ready to use on the train.
- Topping up Snapper cards at Snapper retailers, Snapper kiosks, using the Snapper iOS or Android App or at Wellington Station Ticket Office. Frequent travellers should consider topping up with a Snapper 30-day rail pass instead of a cash amount. If travelling to or from Wellington Station, the Snapper 30-day rail pass will include your bus trip to or from your local train station within zones 4-14 only.
- Tagging on and off for every journey on the platform card readers. Your Snapper payment may be checked on board the train.
South Wairarapa Snapper retailers are located at P&K Martinborough and Kia Ora Dairy Featherston.
You can still pay with cash on board the train. Remember, paying with Snapper will be at least 25% cheaper than the single trip cash fare.
Get ready to say ‘goodbye’ to paper tickets
- From 1 January 2023, train fares can only be purchased with a Snapper card, Snapper 30-day rail pass or a cash fare on board the train.
- 31 December 2022 is the last day to use paper Monthly Passes and 10-trip tickets, and to purchase single trip tickets from Metlink retailers or ticket offices. Swap out your full-price 10-trip tickets with a top-up of equal value on your Snapper card at Wellington Station.
