A new illegal dump site has been discovered at Longbush where a large amount of waste has been thrown around the landscape, including towards the river. If waste leaches into waterways, it can cause harm to life in both rivers and the sea.
The new dumping site is incredibly disappointing for both the community and for the Council, says Mandy DeRitter, Lead Advisor for Recovery and Waste.
Most of the rubbish appears to be glass bottles, which can be recycled – for free – at any transfer station across South Wairarapa and the greater Wairarapa region.
“Not only is this behaviour irresponsible but the large amount of broken glass now scattered across the site poses a real risk to wildlife, the environment and the people who will need to clean it up,” says DeRitter.
“A beautiful natural area has been damaged by thoughtless dumping. We encourage everyone to do the right thing, respect our environment and use the free recycling and disposal services available.”
Cleaning up the environment will be a priority, and staff will investigate the contents to see if there is anything that can identify the offenders.
Rubbish dumping is an offence under the Litter Act 1979. Council officers can issue infringement notices, and offenders can be prosecuted and fined up to $5000.
If you find litter or see illegal dumping taking place, contact the Council on 06 306 9611 or report it via our website or the Antenno app.
