Join the call to be a Road Safety Hero this May

Road Safety Week is racing towards us and we’re joining the call to Be Road Safety Heroes from Monday 12 May to Sunday 18 May – and year round.

Be a Road Safety Hero is this year’s theme of Road Safety Week and organisers are asking us all to be mindful of safety when we drive, walk or cycle. We can all play a part in keeping our communities safe. Our council is taking part in Road Safety Week. Join us and be in to win road safety gear, a Prezzy card voucher and pick up a free high vis safety vest for your tamariki.

How to take part in Road Safety Week 2025 – Everyone in the community can take part in raising their own and others’ awareness of road safety, during this campaign and year round.

Pick up a free safety vest for your tamariki (preschooler) – We have 100 high-vis safety vests to give to tamariki. Pick up yours from any South Wairarapa library while stocks last.

Take part in our drawing competition – draw your road safety hero on the competition entry form, which is available from our libraries.

Pick up a drawing in competition page from any library in South Wairarapa and be in to win a Road Safety Week prize pack or download the PDF by clicking here. The competition is open to everyone between the ages of 0 to 24 years old and runs from Monday 5 May to Friday 23 May. Drop off your entry to any library by Friday 23 May.

The prize pack includes two bike puncture repair kits, one bottle alloy cage, two drink bottles, three mini bike rear lights (USB rechargeable) and eight fluorescent back pack covers.

Hundreds of schools, organisations and communities take part in Road Safety Week each year, so please take part, learn more and boost all of our safety on the road.

Road Safety Week is organised by Brake, a road safety charity that works to prevent road deaths and injury, make streets and communities safer and support the victims of road crashes. Brake launched Road Safety Week in New Zealand in 2012 as an annual event to raise awareness nationwide about road safety and promote steps we can all take to prevent deaths and injuries on the road every day of the year. Brake coordinates Road Safety Week in the United Kingdom and has done since 1997.

Road Safety Week is sponsored by BECA and the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.
