Featherston facilities have received a total of $413,000 from the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) to support economic growth and stimulate employment displaced by Covid-19 under the Shovel-Ready applications. Featherston’s Community Centre, ANZAC Hall and War Memorial will all receive funding.
South Wairarapa Mayor Alex Beijen says the funding is welcome news for Featherston and the wider district.
“Local workers are at risk from the economic impacts of Covid-19. This latest investment will help redeployment and employment of those who have lost jobs and are most in need of support, as well as boosting local economy.
“Investment in these important assets will also help build a sense of pride within Featherston, which is our gateway to Wairarapa.
“In recent years, Featherston has attracted many people from over the hill, with its relatively affordable housing and easy commute to Wellington. As a result, Featherston has seen a huge leap in house prices, and investment such as this will assist in bringing its facilities to a higher standard,” says Mr Beijen.
The Government PGF seeks to ensure that people living all over New Zealand can reach their full potential by helping build a regional economy that is sustainable, inclusive and productive.
Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones says across the country more than 1,000 people are expected to be employed for various periods in the renovation programme.
Details of grants as follows:
Featherston Community Centre – $110,732
Funding will be used for renovation purposes encompassing electrical work, carpark preparation, painting, asbestos removal, sound proofing and exterior reinstatement. Work is due to commence immediately and is to be completed within three months.
ANZAC/Kiwi Hall – $77,777
Funding will be used for renovation purposes encompassing refurbishment of bathrooms and toilets to comply with heritage status, restoring walls and repairing water leaks and damage. Work is due to commence immediately and is to be completed within two months.
Featherston War Memorial – $224,905
Funding will be used to earthquake strengthen, conduct an engineer inspection report including design and transportation, site establishment and disestablishment and project management. Work is due to commence immediately and is to be completed within six months.
