Giving old tyres a new lease of life

South Wairarapa residents can now dispose of old tyres for free at the Martinborough Transfer Station, thanks to Tyrewise, which the council joined in April, along with several other councils from around the motu.

The Tyrewise scheme aims to turn old tyres into new opportunities, ensuring that end-of-life tyres are responsibly collected, recycled and repurposed. The aim of this work is to reduce waste and the potentially harmful environmental impacts of old tyres.

Residents can drop off up to five tyres per visit to the transfer station, free of charge. All tyres must be clean, free of debris and have no rims. A disposal fee applies for tyres that remain on their rims. Tyrewise accepts air filled and solid tyres from motorised vehicles, which includes cars, motorbikes, trailers, lorries and off-road vehicles.

Tyrewise is the first regulated tyre product stewardship scheme in New Zealand. The scheme is funded by the tyre stewardship fee paid on newly imported tyres.
