Message from the Waka Kotahi and Wellington Transport Alliance:
One-hour closures of State Highway 2 over the Remutaka Hill are planned on four mornings next week from Monday 29 May to Thursday 1 June between 9.30am and 10.30am, weather permitting
The closures are for an aerial operation led by the Department of Conservation to control feral goats and reduce the risk of them causing an accident on the road.
The safety of those who use the Remutaka Hill Road is the number one priority. Please be assured the road closures will be no longer than one hour. You may wish to plan your morning journeys around these closures to avoid delays.
Closures to be confirmed each day
As the aerial operation is dependent on the weather, Wellington Transport Alliance will confirm each morning if the closures will take place.
- The aerial operator will monitor rain, cloud and wind conditions and confirm each morning if it is safe to fly.
- Their decision should be known by approximately 7.30am each day.
- Wellington Transport Alliance will then email their database of Remutaka road users to let them know if the road will be closed or not.
Walking trails closed during the aerial operation
Nearby walking trails will be closed during the operation. For your safety, please do not walk in the area during these times in May and June.
Joint operation
This joint control operation is being undertaken by DOC, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, NZ Rail, New Zealand Native Forests Restoration Trust and Greater Wellington to control feral goats on or near the road and railway tracks.
