Greytown’s Main Street, State Highway 2 (SH2) is to have a road rebuild this month, which starts on Monday 28 April.
The work is forecast to take up to two weeks, depending on weather conditions. The biggest impact will be on SH2, Main Street, Greytown, between Wood and Church Streets as well as Kuratawhiti and Jellicoe Streets.
The road will be closed to northbound traffic, between Humphries Street and North Street.
Work will be done throughout the day and night from Sunday night to Friday afternoons, with a 24/7 northbound detour to be in place.

Works will be 24/7 during the day and night from Sunday nights to Friday afternoons with a northbound detour.
About the work
This section of road has reached the end of its life and is in poor structural condition. The NZ Transport Agency Wellington Transport Alliance (WTA) will carry out a road rebuild to fix the deep-seated pavement issues.
This road rebuild is significant as it needs to be excavated to a depth of up to 270mm and rebuilt from the base up. Road rebuilds are disruptive, however, they lead to a longer pavement lifespan and reduce the need for maintenance in the future.
Key impacts
- While these works will create a longer lasting and durable road, the works are going to be unavoidably disruptive to the Greytown community. The road will be rebuilt in four sections, one section at a time, to minimise disruption to businesses and residents.
- There will be no car parking available on the majority of SH2 Main Street during the works. Parking is encouraged on neighbouring streets such as West Street.
- There will be a 24/7 northbound detour in place – see map attached.
- Hastwell Street and McMaster will be closed from Main Street at times.
- There will be significant heavy machinery and work vehicles on site day and night for the duration of works. These vehicles will create noise and dust.
- These works will impact deliveries and rubbish collection to people within the works area.
- Residents and businesses between 78 to 154 Main Street are the most impacted as this is where the road rebuild is. They have been communicated to separately.
Traffic management
- SH2 northbound traffic will need to detour 24/7 via Humphries Street, West Street, and North Street for up to two weeks beginning on Monday 28 April. Southbound traffic will be able to travel on SH2 through Greytown at a reduced speed and an altered lane layout.
- Pedestrians will be able to use the footpaths and temporary pedestrian crossings at all times. Crew members will be onsite to ensure safe crossings.
- Most carparks on SH2 between Humphries Street/Papawai Road and North Street will be closed. People will need to park on side streets.
Detour route
All northbound traffic to detour via Humphries, West and North Streets. Southbound traffic can travel through Main Street at a reduced speed and altered lane layout. Please see the detour map, below.
Works location
The physical works are between Wood Street and Kuratawhiti and Jellicoe streets. The works will be completed by section as indicated by the map, below. Each section will take up to five days.
