Two camping grounds on the South Wairarapa coast are at risk of flash flooding. South Wairarapa District Council is investigating whether overnight camping needs to be banned at Te Awaiti and North Tora.
Advice from Greater Wellington Regional Council is that with climate change, there will be more storm surges and heavy rain events. Both campgrounds sit at the mouth of rivers with sandbars, and river levels can rise in three or four hours. With no alert system at either campground, the Council is concerned sleeping campers could have no warning of danger.
