Freedom camping self-containment changes effective Sunday 7 June

Freedom campers visiting South Wairarapa are being reminded of changes to self‑containment rules, with the transition from the old ‘blue sticker’ system to the new certification.

Under national law, blue self‑containment warrants will no longer be valid from 7 June 2026. From that point, only vehicles with the new green warrant certification will be recognised as self‑contained.

There is also a shift away from the familiar sticker system. While blue stickers were commonly displayed in the past, the new system relies on a green warrant card and national register, rather than labels on vehicles.

The South Wairarapa District Council Freedom Camping Bylaw identifies areas in the district where camping is prohibited, as well as restricted sites where conditions apply, including locations limited to certified self‑contained vehicles only.

This means that, once the transition period ends, campers staying in designated self‑contained areas will need to ensure their vehicle meets the new standard and holds a valid green warrant. Vehicles without certification will only be able to use sites specifically set aside for non‑self‑contained camping, if available.

Council advises campers to always check signage and local rules before staying overnight, as requirements vary by location.
