Featherston Library has been part of our community for 130 years.

Located on Fitzherbert Street, the library first opened in 1896 as the Featherston Literary Institute and has been in continual use ever since. It has long been a place for learning, connection, and community life in the heart of Featherston.
The library owes its beginnings to Alfred Matthews of Waiorongomai, one of Wairarapa’s most well-known residents. His generous gift of land and funds meant the library opened debt free on 30 April 1896, welcoming its first 83 subscribers. The first librarian was Mr D Fry.
While the exterior of the building remains much as it was over a century ago, the inside has evolved with the times, including internal reconfiguration after a fire in 1971 and a rear extension added in 2003.
In recognition of its significance, Featherston Library was listed as a Historic Place (Category 2) in 1983 by Heritage New Zealand, Pouhere Taonga. More history is here: https://www.heritage.org.nz/list-details/3976/Library+Building
