South Wairarapa District Council has confirmed the appointment of community members to its Rural and Coastal Advisory Group, following a successful expression of interest (EOI) process.
Mayor Fran Wilde said the calibre and diversity of applicants reflected the strong interest in rural and coastal issues across the district.
“We’re delighted to welcome this group of committed and knowledgeable community members. As Council, we need clear priorities in place, particularly around issues such as roading and resilience, so community input will be vital.
“This group ensures the unique challenges and opportunities faced by rural and coastal communities will continue to be heard and directly inform Council decision-making.”
The EOI process, overseen by a selection panel appointed at Council’s March meeting, attracted strong interest from across the district, with a total of 19 applications received. Appointments were confirmed in April, and the group held its inaugural meeting in early May.
Jenny Boyne from Tora has been appointed chair and the following appointed as members:
Aaron Woodcock, Bec Nicholson, Belinda Milnes, Brian Jephson, Chris Sparks, Geoff Vause, Kim Hayes, Lee Flutey. They will be joined by Councillors Collier Isaacs and Aidan Ellims.
The establishment of the Rural and Coastal Advisory Group stems directly from the Council’s 2024 Representation Review, where feedback highlighted the need for stronger rural and coastal representation and better connections between Council and these communities. The advisory group was identified as a practical way to strengthen those voices in Council processes and provide an ongoing channel for local insight.
