MEDIA RELEASE: Mayors Commend Community Response as Alert Level 4 Extended

20 August 2021

Wairarapa’s Mayors have commended the community response to the Level 4 lockdown so far and called for calm and a continued effort as Level 4 is extended into next week following Covid-19 cases identified in Wellington.

Masterton Mayor Lyn Patterson said news of the Wellington cases brought home the seriousness of the situation.

“It is not unexpected, but it will have come as a shock to many in the Wairarapa to have confirmed cases so close to Wairarapa,” she said.

“As councils we were prepared for this possibility and all essential services will continue as planned under Alert Level 4.

“Now is the time to continue following the rules, stay at home, and if you need to go out, wear a mask if you are visiting supermarkets, pharmacies or any essential services.”

Mayor Patterson said it was disappointing to hear a small number of reports of people resistant to rules around masks.

“We know this is a stressful situation, but we are all in this together. The rules require us to wear a mask when visiting businesses or services operating at Alert Level 4 – and that is something we can all do to help.”

Carterton Mayor Greg Laing shared this view.

“An extension of Alert Level 4 is without doubt frustrating and a little worrying for our community.  Rest assured, myself along with fellow elected members and council staff are working to make sure our community members and businesses receive all the support possible.

“Please continue to follow the Level 4 rules, wear a mask when out making essential trips, scan in wherever you go, and stay in your bubble.

”Times like these really showcase and highlight our community’s strengths. It’s essential to remain calm and positive – there is so much to look forward to when we can again return to our normal routines.”

South Wairarapa Mayor Alex Beijen said the extension of lockdown signalled a focus on support measures.

“This afternoon’s decision should come as no surprise, given the developing situation in Auckland and the Coromandel, and now Wellington, and the risk to all parts of the country.

“As this lockdown is now longer than three days, Councils are starting up contact with social services and other community groups to ensure all our community is being looked after.”

Mayor Beijen praised the community for its efforts.

“So far, I can say South Wairarapa has had a superb response to this lockdown. People are behaving well and sticking to the rules, and I encourage everyone to keep this up. Keeping to the Level 4 rules means we keep everyone around us safe as well.”
