Roading maintenance and renewals  

We develop an annual programme of maintenance work and resurface about 22 kms of road every year. Most of this work takes place between September and December, when warm weather and ground temperatures ensure the best results. Much of this seasonal work is grouped into several main categories: 

• Preventative renewals, such as resealing to protect road surfaces and extend their life. 
• Major renewals, including road rehabilitation, which involves rebuilding roads that have reached the end of their service life. 
• Drainage and storm water management focusing on culverts, kerb and channel, and stormwater systems to help water flow safely and reduce damage during heavy rain. 
• Structural works to ensure bridges and large culverts remain safe and reliable. 
• Unsealed road maintenance, such as adding gravel to an unsealed road to replace material that’s worn away, improving grip and reducing dust and potholes. 

This seasonal programme of maintenance work to resurface and reseal roads across South Wairarapa is starting again this week. Other work, such as berm mowing, kerb and channel sweeping and unsealed road grading keeps our contractors busy. 

The work doesn’t stop during winter though. Ongoing roadside and asset maintenance occurs year around, including street sweeping, mowing, spraying, line marking, signage, grading, and fixing potholes.  

Road maintenance schedule September – December 2026

Here’s some of the work that’s programmed until the end of December 2026. If work is happening on your street that will impact access, you’ll get a letter before the work takes place. The letter will include information on where and when the work is happening, how long it should take, if there is anything you need to do (like keep your car off the road), and contact numbers for the contractor and Council.
