News: Heavy rain, winds on the way

11 July 2022

With forecasts for high winds and heavy rainfall over the next couple of days, Powerco is advising residents to take action to lower the risk of power outages.

Strong winds and heavy rain is expected in Wairarapa from early Tuesday morning. Between 70mm and 100m of rain is expected fall in the Tararuas between 3am and 3pm, Tuesday 12 July, meaning rivers and streams may rise rapidly.

There’s also a strong wind watch, with winds rising to severe gale in exposed places, in the Wairarapa from 5am Tuesday, 12 July to 8am Wednesday, 13 July. And a heavy swell warning from Turakirae Head to Cape Palliser between 6pm Tuesday, to 4am Wednesday, with a swell of up to 3 metres early Tuesday evening.

Powerco is urging customers to secure trampolines, outdoor furniture, and anything else that may blow into power lines, and to make they have emergency supplies in case there is an outage.

To report an outage, go to Powerco’s website, or call your retail electricity company. Low hanging lines can be reported on Powerco’s emergency line 0800 272727. Updates on outages can be found on here
