Last night we moved to COVID alert level 3, well done everyone. Here’s what Council services are available now.
Council Services that remain unchanged under Alert Level 3:
- Provision of drinking water, wastewater treatment and disposal, and water testing.
- Kerbside rubbish and recycling collection (you can still get your rubbish bags at the supermarket).
- Burials – limited to 10 people in attendance.
- Roadside rubbish bins emptied.
- Provide LIMs, PIMs and processing building and planning consents.
- Process payments (through online banking and direct debits – no cash).
- Online library service – you can download the app here.
- Public parks / spaces are open, but please be mindful of minimum 2 metre physical distancing
- Building inspections.
Services with limited availability under Alert Level 3:
- Essential roading maintenance and repair, including clearing gutters to prevent flooding.
- Environmental Health queries will be recorded and assessed on a case-by-case basis.
- Martinborough, as well as Masterton, Carterton, Castlepoint and Riversdale transfer stations, are OPEN for general waste under the following rules:
- They are NOT open for recycling due to reduced processing capacity.
- They are NOT open for green waste (this is planned for Level 2).
- Card payments only accepted – no cash.
- Masks must be worn at all times.
Services not available under Alert Level Three:
- Greytown and Featherston transfer stations.
- South Wairarapa Libraries at Greytown, Featherston and Martinborough (online only).
- Community Halls.
- Playgrounds, skate parks, cycle parks & exercise equipment.
- Public toilets – there is one public toilet available to essential service road users in the Featherston toilet block.
- Food, alcohol or other business licencing services.
- Public campgrounds.
Rates payments were due on 20 August 2021 and extended to 27 August 2021.
If you contacted the Council before 27 August 2021 to arrange alternative payment arrangements, then any late payment penalties will have been waived. For all other late payments, a penalty will be payable.
We recommend payment by direct debit or internet banking, however, if you cannot use internet banking, please contact us to discuss rates payments during Alert Level 3 lockdown.

Animal Services / Dog Pound
We will respond to emergencies only – dog attacks, aggressive dogs, and roaming stock. Animal Services will attempt to pick up contained dogs only if we cannot reunite owners remotely.
- When calling, please let us know if the dog is wearing a registration tag or identity tag.
- In the case of roaming stock, please advise when calling if you know where stock belongs or who it belongs to.
- If you have a lost dog, and for any of the above situations, please phone the Bylaw Officers at South Wairarapa District Council on (06) 306 9611 (24 hours).
