Hinekura Road Remediation Project
Summary
Following several severe weather events, 1673 Hinekura Road was impacted by a series of major slips that made the road impassable on several occasions in 2020 and 2021, including a significant slip prior to Christmas 2021. It is a landslide that has likely been active for many years and is prone to ongoing movement and instability following heavy rain. This project page provides ongoing updates on the remediation work for Hinekura Road to stabilise the landslide area and road, and prevent further erosion.
Erosion and landslide remediation plan
Greater Wellington Regional Council made a risk mitigation recommendation to Council in August 2021 which was accepted. A copy of their report is attached. Based on this report, a project plan was created, also attached, and work commenced to:
- remove damaged and leaning trees from the hillside
- construct a new dam
- construct new drainage across the road
- drain and decommission the old dam
- fence to exclude stock from planting area
- replant to encourage ground stability.
This project plan was also presented to residents at a meeting at Hinekura Hall on 2 December 2021 where a robust yet constructive discussion was held. Work commenced in January 2022 and the monthly updates can be found below.
