Freedom Camping Bylaw

Consultation on the Proposed Freedom Camping Bylaw has now closed.

There have been some recent changes to the national legislation for freedom camping and we want to update our approach to freedom camping in South Wairarapa. We are proposing a Freedom Camping Bylaw to help us manage how and where freedom camping can occur on land Council manages within the district. Our plan is that this proposed Freedom Camping Bylaw updates the approach to freedom camping taken in the Coastal Camping Bylaw and gives Council a tool to respond to issues related to freedom camping.

The Proposed Freedom Camping Bylaw enables us to identify those areas where freedom camping is appropriate and those areas which may need protection for reasons including environmental and cultural significance, risks to health and safety and other practical considerations. We want to ensure we find the right balance between the needs of our communities and our visitors and all those who choose to freedom camp.
