Media release
South Wairarapa District Council has purchased land at 38 – 40 Fox Street in Featherston.
In 2024, Kiwi Rail undertook safety improvements at the rail crossing in Featherston that directly affected the southbound entry to a carpark that is situated alongside the pharmacy and local businesses, as well as removing on-street parking.
The land at Fox Street became available for sale in 2025 and the Featherston Community Board requested Council investigate the purchase of the site.
As part of the Long-Term Plan deliberations Council approved funding to negotiate the purchase of the land as a strategic asset to enable future public use and access. It was put into the Long-Term Plan with a maximum value of $500k as per the Council resolution.
Council will work with the Featherston Community Board in early 2027 to engage with the community around its use, such as walking, parking or green space.
