Heavy Rain Warning – 26 June 2026

Metservice has issued a Heavy Rain Warning for the Tararua Range, Wairarapa south of Masterton, and Wellington (excluding Porirua).

Period: 21hrs from 9am Friday 26 June – 6am Saturday 27 June

Forecast: Expect 80 to 110 mm of rain on top of what has already fallen, especially about the ranges. Peak rates of 10 to 15 mm/h expected about the ranges today. Minimal chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.

Impact: Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible.

Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous. It’s expected that river levels will continue to rise which would impact the routes in and out of Martinborough.

  • Longbush Road is OPEN for access in and out of Martinborough
  • Turanganui bridge on Lake Ferry Road washed out – access expected to be reestablished midweek
  • Hikawera Road CLOSED due to slips
  • Kahutara Road CLOSED, spillway operating
  • Pahautea Road CLOSED spillway operating
  • Pukio West RoadCLOSED spillway operating
  • Lower Valley Bridge on Kahutara Road CLOSED
  • SH53 Waihenga Bridge is CLOSED
  • The road is CLOSED at the Lake Ferry Road and Kahutara Road junction
  • Ponatahi Bridge over the Huangarua river is CLOSED
  • White Rock Road at Lagoon Hills is CLOSED
  • Raho Ruru Road CLOSED
  • Whakatomotomo Road CLOSED
  • Surface flooding on White Rock Road at Tuturumuri school and sections of Cape Palliser Road

General advice

  • Do not travel on the roads if not necessary.
  • If you live in a low-lying area that is prone to flooding, you should consider self-evacuating to stay with friends and family.
  • Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions are possible.  
  • Make sure you have enough supplies at home to last a few days if you become impacted by road closures.
  • Never walk, swim or drive through flood water. Respect road closures notices and signs, no not try to pass through.
  • In an emergency or life threatening situation, call 111.
