The Turanganui Bridge on Lake Ferry Road has been wiped out on its northern side. This has isolated several communities which are temporarily cut off. Initial assessments indicate that repairs could take until midweek to establish access, depending on the current weather conditions and access to rock material.
The Wairarapa Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated and is coordinating the response. A key priority is ensuring the safety and wellbeing of affected residents. This includes identifying any immediate support required, such as access to essential supplies, medical needs, and welfare assistance.
We ask impacted residents to:
- Follow official updates and advice. Police will be nearby to encourage the community to adhere to advice.
- Avoid attempting to cross closed or unsafe areas – in particular around the bridge which is extremely vunerable
- Check in on neighbours where it is safe to do so
We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation while crews work to restore access.
