Lower Valley bridge – amended restrictions in place

Following a recent inspection of the Lower Valley Bridge on Kahutara Road, the weight and speed restrictions have been reassessed and the following will now apply:

  • Gross weight permitted is now 25,000kg (previously 44,000kg)
  • Axle weight remains as it currently is at 8,200kg
  • Speed limit is now 30km/h (previously 10km/hr)

The frequency of the bridge inspection will increase to every six months to monitor the condition of the bridge deck. Signage alerting road users to the new restrictions will be erected at the SH53 and Lake Ferry Road intersections of Kahutara Road.

We understand these changes may impact transport operations and freight movements and the decision has been made to ensure the continued safety of all road users and to protect the structural integrity of the bridge. The revised weight and axle load restrictions, together with the 30 km/h speed limit, are considered appropriate measures to manage risk and maintain public safety while extending the service life of this aging bridge.
