South Wairarapa District Council Chief Executive Janice Smith has announced she will not seek reappointment to another permanent term as Chief Executive of the organisation when the current three-year contract expires on 12 November 2026.

Mayor Fran Wilde acknowledges her contribution to the council and the wider South Wairarapa community.

“Janice has made a significant contribution to the organisation. She joined the council at a time when a firm focus on management, sound processes and organisational performance was needed, and she has provided leadership with determination and commitment. On behalf of elected members, I thank her for this.

During her tenure, local government has had to contend with significant changes imposed by central government and Janice has navigated these challenges in a way that has benefitted the Council.

We respect Janice’s decision to step down and are grateful for her flexibility around her departure date, which ensures an orderly transition as we begin a search for her replacement.”

Mrs Smith will remain as Interim Chief Executive while Council undertakes a recruitment process for the role.

“I am incredibly proud of the organisation and the culture that has been built over the past three years. Significant progress has been made during this time, often through challenging circumstances, and I believe strong foundations are now in place for the future” shared Mrs Smith.

“I am confident the organisation is well positioned for what comes next.”
