South Wairarapa Libraries embrace Te Wiki o te reo Māori

Māori Language Week activities at Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough libraries

Te Wiki o te reo Māori is happening now and South Wairarapa Libraries have launched a new te reo games kete for library users to celebrate the 51st year of this significant week.

The new te reo games include different kēmu kāri (card games), magnetic dress-up figures, a te reo Bingo game and tipu board game. Each kete contains a mix and can be issued for three weeks, just like library books.

South Wairarapa Libraries’ Te Ao Māori Specialist, Ali Te Pohe says the libraries also have a stack of online resources that anyone can use in their te reo haerenga/journey.

“We have activities for families all week with wordsearches, sentence-builder games, matching games and more. Library staff have also spent the last couple of weeks making videos to showcase our new games kete and to practise our te reo and we are posting a different video on Facebook every day this week.  They were a lot of fun to make and really boosted staff confidence in speaking te reo, which is what it’s all about.”
