What’s on Top? Long Term Plan and Spatial Planning Community Engagement

Tell us what’s on top for you. Remember, this is your plan too.

South Wairarapa District Council invites you to share your thoughts on what we as a council need to do to improve the wellbeing of our district and communities.

Council will be setting key priorities and the long-term vision for the district in our Long Term Plan (LTP) and Spatial Plan, so this is your chance to give early input into draft plans that will be formally consulted on, as per the usual process in March/April next year.

The engagement period closes 5pm, Tuesday 27 October.

Why is it important to share your views?

Our role, as a local council, is to enable democratic local decision-making and action by, and on behalf of, communities; and to promote the social, economic, environmental, and cultural wellbeing of our communities now and in the future.

We need to meet the current and future needs of our community for infrastructure, local public services and performance of regulatory functions in a way that is beneficial and cost-effective for our district.

As a valued member of the community, your feedback, along with information from central government and other key stakeholders, plays a critical role in helping us identify needs. The planning decisions we make – including about roads, libraries, community events and the water you drink – will impact you and your whanau.

It is your democratic right to participate in local decision-making and we encourage you to have your say.

What is a Long Term Plan and a Spatial Plan?

The LTP sets our strategic direction for the next 10 years and includes project priorities, budgets and rates forecasts for the next 10 years. The Plan was last released in 2018 and is updated every three years.

The Spatial Plan is a map of how we envision the district to look in 30 years’ time. Early engagement on this project started last year, and we’re now integrating this work into the LTP process.

To put it simply, the Spatial Plan sets the destination and the Long Term Plan describes the pathways we will take in the first 10 years to reach where we want to be in 30 years’ time.
