Wairarapa District Licensing Committee Members Appointed

MEDIA RELEASE

WAIRARAPA DISTRICT LICENSING COMMITTEES MEMBERS APPOINTED

A new process to consider all alcohol licensing applications in the Wairarapa has been put in place, with the establishment of District Licensing Committees (DLC) in each of the three councils.

The committees have been established under the new Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act which aims to minimise the harm caused by excessive and inappropriate drinking.

The DLCs will consider all applications for on-licences, off-licences, club licences, special licences, temporary authorities, and manager’s certificates. Each has a Chair (or Commissioner) and three other DLC members selected from a pool of seven who have been appointed by the Wairarapa Liquor Working Group (WLWG).

Viv Napier, WLWG Chair, was delighted with the quality of the applicants who had been appointed to these roles. “It was a good process and we received a high calibre of applicants, with a wide range of ages and experiences,” she explained. “They share a passion for the community and have strong links to a number of different areas.

“The role of the WLWG was to empower a group of people to deal with this complex issue. They have undertaken a comprehensive training course and become our local experts on this crucial topic within our community, which affects many people in both positive and negative ways.

“Balance is the key to good decision-making around this issue, taking into account all the relevant data that is available. This group of people certainly have the skills to do that.”
