Adverse weather warnings

Tropical Cyclone Fili

(Update, 13 April)

Cyclone Fili continues to batter the Gisborne area but it is heading away to sea. The strong wind watch over the Wairarapa region has been lifted.

(12 April)

  • Cyclone Fili is approaching the top half of North Island and is expected to be a significant event in parts of the island. In particular the Gisborne and Wairoa regions, which have been upgraded to a “red” warning for heavy rain late Tuesday and early Wednesday.
  • Fili is expected to bring strong winds to the Wairarapa and Wellington region from 9am to 9pm Wednesday 13 April 2022 – gale force in some exposed places.
  • While rainfall was not expected to be significant, Metservice’s advice on Monday (10 April) suggests the severe south to southwesterly winds could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. People are advised to avoid outdoor activities and unnecessary travel during this event, secure loose loads and stay up to date with the latest warnings, forecasts, and official advice.
  • Wairarapa is also expected to have large waves, with heavy rain at this stage only for Wednesday – bearing in mind cyclones can change track and severity can change. Although no Rain Watch has been issued for Wairarapa, we know that heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous, especially if large waves are also pounding the roads.
  • Since Monday, there has been a slight deviation from the cyclone’s forecasted path so its impact may continue to reduce. Keep up to date with the latest information from the Metservice website.
  • Our roading team are very much aware and prepared. Should you experience any impact on the coast, roads and surrounding areas that require urgent attention, please email Council at any time, or call during business hours 06 306 9611.
