Spatial Plan

Consultation on the Spatial Plan has now closed and the first stage of the Plan, focussed on its residential elements, is now out. Master planning is due to begin in early 2022 in Featherston, with more limited planning of Martinborough and Greytown in 2023 and 2024. Work on the district’s Rural, Industrial and Commercial zones will be done under the Wairarapa Combined District Plan, which is being reviewed by the region’s three councils.

South Wairarapa Spatial Plan – Mapping Our Future 2050

Our Spatial Plan will provide a blueprint for what we want our district to look like in the future. The challenge is to develop in ways that support the future prosperity and wellbeing of our district but protects what makes it special.

The Spatial Plan will align with our district vision, refresh and feed into future annual plans, long-term plans and district plans, and provide guidance for the development of infrastructure.

Early community engagement told us to focus on residential growth options as a top priority which is why the first step of the Spatial Plan focuses on Residential Growth Areas.

Step 1: Residential Growth Areas

On 10 November, Council considered all written and verbal submissions and made decisions on residential growth areas for future development within Martinborough, Featherston and Greytown.

The final plan identifies the future residential growth areas for each of the three major towns and will provide choice while respecting the unique character of each of them.

The South Wairarapa Spatial Plan document provides further information on all the respective residential areas, including the Spatial Plan Map and Strategic Drivers Diagram for the district and timeframes for master planning.

The South Wairarapa Spatial Plan will be reviewed at least once every 5 years, but the plan is a ‘live’ document that may be reviewed if a significant change of circumstances arises.
