NEWS: Alcohol bylaw passed

4 November 2021

An alcohol control bylaw which benefits hospitality venues in Featherston has been ratified by the South Wairarapa District Council.

At its meeting on 3 November, the Council adopted the Alcohol Control Bylaw 2021 which controls the consumption or possession on alcohol in public places to reduce and mitigate crime and disorder.

The bylaw, which comes into operation on 4 November, also controls for temporary special events in public places, including Toast Martinborough.

There are no permanent alcohol ban areas in the bylaw; however, it enables the Council to establish alcohol ban areas in future by resolution where criteria is met.

The bylaw benefits Featherston which had a historic ban on outdoor drinking in public places, and now sits in the same position as Greytown and Martinborough.

A period of formal consultation was made from 2 August to 5 September.

A copy of the final bylaw is available here.  The bylaw is also available for inspection from the Council offices at Martinborough and the libraries in Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough.
