NEWS: Wood St trees

1 November 2021

Several trees in Greytown’s Wood St are being felled because of their diseased condition. The professional arborist’s report raised public safety concerns which have been confirmed by the state of trees that have been felled. The core of the trees shows severe decay.

Under section 330 of the RMA, the Council has specific powers to act in an emergency to prevent immediate and foreseeable effects on power lines, property and life.  They have been the subject of numerous complaints from the public, have created outages, and the arborist told us they posed a significant risk to surrounding houses. There is also a kindergarten nearby, where some branches have fallen into the carpark.

The felling of the trees is being monitored and recorded to ensure the Council has accurate information to apply for a retrospective resource consent as required under the RMA’s emergency powers.

Please be reassured that we will only remove as much of the trees as is strictly necessary to protect the public and protect property.

Notable trees are a real treasure for Greytown and the region.  We will only disturb them when absolutely necessary to protect our community, and will be sure to follow regular consent process unless immediate safety concerns oblige us to act otherwise.
