9 April 2020
Kerbside recycling will resume forurban communities from Tuesday, 14 April.
Because of the Easter Monday public holiday, urban collections will be one day later than normal, so Greytown’s will be Wednesday, Martinborough’s Thursday and Featherston’s Friday. As per the online calendar, next week is Week 1 so put out your mixed recycling wheelie bins, crates with glass the following week.
Forcoastal communities (Lake Ferry, Ngawi, Tora, Te Awaiti)collections will take place on Monday as normal. (Note that the coastal winter collection schedule is due tostartw/c 4 May;that is, rubbish and recycling collections moveto fortnightly – this will be confirm nearer the time.)
We appreciate that you may have more recycling than normal and ask that you do not overload recycling bins, as this will cause a health and safety risk to collection staff.
The collection of kerbside recycling was suspended for two weeks to allow the contractor, Earthcare, time to ensure its staff were kitted out with appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
Currently, all transfer stations in Wairarapa remain closed to all but essential services. This is in line with Government directives to ensure people stay home so, together, we can break the chain of COVID-19.
Rural residents who have mounting rubbish and recycling are urged to store this as best they can, preferably in a dry place. Where possible, they are encouraged to reduce and reuse waste. For example, food scraps can be composted and meat bones can put into a deep freeze if there is space. Non-compostable food waste should be stored high up out of reach of animals and children, and recyclable bottles, jars, tins and plastics should all be rinsed first to prevent them from smelling.
Thank you to all residents for your patience and to the Earthcare team for resuming the kerbside recycling service during this challenging time.
