South Wairarapa Mayor Alex Beijen said today that the safety of the district’s drinking water is a top priority for him and his council. Speaking after a presentation from Wellington Water, Mayor Beijen said it was clear there is some work to be done in order for the district’s water treatment plants to be performing as they should.

“We need to have a multi-barrier approach to providing safe drinking water. This is best practice, and is what our community expects. I look forward to working with the new council and Wellington Water on how we can achieve that.”

Wellington Water took over South Wairarapa’s water operations on 1 October and immediately began a full review of its water infrastructure and operations. The briefing today outlined the work required to bring the water treatment plants into compliance with drinking water standards, and the process for finalising estimates for a longer term work programme.

“Views on delivering safe drinking water have changed following the Havelock North Inquiry, Martinborough’s own water issues earlier this year, and the announcement of a new water regulator,” said Mayor Beijen.

“It’s important that we’re open with the community about how we are performing now, how we want to perform, and how we want to get there.

“Safe, clean, clear water for the community is absolutely a priority.”

Wellington Water’s review, options and priorities will be discussed at the Council’s ordinary meeting next week.

“More information will be available to the community after the Council meeting on 20 November,” MayorBeijen said.
