The South Wairarapa District Council (SWDC) has confirmed the sale of the Council land on Fitzherbert Street in Featherston. This is the section between the supermarket car park and the new Town Square – currently being used as parking and storage by the Town Square contractors.
SWDC confirms that they have sold the land to Marcus Darley.
SWDC CEO, Paul Crimp says Council is pleased to be able to sell this land to an entrepreneurial local.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the development progress; this is a good sign how things continue to move forward in Featherston”.
“We have a lot of smart and creative people over here that are passionate about the district and have a long term vision of how it can be enhanced. This new development will be good for the residents of Featherston and visitors alike”.
Property Developer, Marcus Darley & partner say they are very excited to join forces with Neil McLachlan, a renowned Global Interior Designer based in Wellington to develop this prominent site on Featherston’s main street.
“We intend to design and build a smart retail, hospitality and possibly accommodation complex that will comfortably fit with the older heritage buildings in the town and be complimentary to the new Featherston town square development.”
“We’d like to attract a different and unique range of retail and hospitality tenants; perhaps a florist, clothing, books, antiques, artisan foods, café, wine bar, restaurant etc. to complement the current interesting choices of retail at the southern end of Featherston; business concepts that will enhance the town and benefit the locals.
“My business partners and I really want to see the South Wairarapa region continue to grow. We especially think that Featherston will benefit from this new development and we’ll make sure we have a diverse range of businesses in there which look great and works well with existing Featherston businesses, so it’s a win-win for the whole town.”
“Following resource consents we expect to begin building early 2017”.
Being a new build, the proposed rental areas are able to be bespoke-configured to a range of new tenants within the complex at this early stage.

Marcus moved to the Wairarapa in 1998 and over the years has lived in Martinborough and Greytown.
Marcus bought The Tin Hut in 2004 and developed it in to the bar, restaurant & gardens that continues today under new business ownership.
