Parks Week 2023: A Positive influence on our wellbeing

Parks Week is about celebrating how spending time in our green spaces is important for our wellbeing, says Sandra Burles, Wairarapa Walking and Cycling Coordinator.

The celebration lasts from Saturday March 4 to Sunday March 12, and is recognised across Australia and New Zealand.

“If you’ve always wanted to visit a local park but didn’t know where they all are or their facilities, then this week is for you!”

With so many parks and open spaces right at your doorstep, why not get out and enjoy them?

Our local parks offer great options, from short walks to simply sitting, playground options for all ages, shared paths, exercise equipment and dog walking areas, Sandra says.

“Visit your local park, or venture further afield to try a new park in one of your neighbouring towns.

“Head to Masterton and enjoy spectacular Queen Elizabeth II Park – its right next to town and there are tons of things for families to enjoy there.”

“You can take the dog to Carterton’s Sparks Park for some fresh air and shade trees; stroll through Featherston’s bush walks; or enjoy the new StoryWalk® at Martinborough’s Considine Park.”

Sandra says getting outdoors is “great for our personal wellbeing, helping us feel refreshed, rejuvenating our minds and our bodies”.

“Parks Week can help us all focus on how spending time in our parks and open spaces positively influences our wellbeing.

“Getting outdoors is beneficial for our physical and mental wellbeing.

“And with all the curve balls life has thrown at us recently, it’s more important than ever to take care of our waiora.

“We would love to see as many Kiwis as possible getting outside and reaping the benefits of fresh air and physical activity.”

Masterton Mayor Garry Caffell says his Council puts a lot of effort into the park spaces

“We know our community appreciates enjoy the terrific outdoor spaces on offer here.

“Two Masterton parks, Queen Elizabeth Park and Henley Lake, recently received international Green Flag awards, and there are many more local parks around our District – why not spend some of summer getting out and enjoying them?”

Ron Mark, Mayor of Carterton, says his district’s parks are much-loved community assets.

“We are fortunate in Carterton to have so many green spaces close to the centre of town.

“I love them, and I know my fellow residents do too.

“We get many people, from across Wairarapa and beyond, visiting as well.

“We get many positive comments on how much our parks mean to their whanau.

“Carterton also has many picturesque reserves all across the district.

“Our hard-working Parks and Reserves team are out there every day, ensuring they remain safe and attractive destinations for all.”

South Wairarapa Mayor Martin Connelly notes the wide variety of parks in his district, from coastal reserves to skate parks and historic areas such as Stella Bull and Soldiers Memorial parks in Greytown.

“Parks are one of the great public assets that we can all enjoy for free, at any time.

“This time of year is usually the best time for us to get out with our family, whanau and pet dogs to soak up the sun in the wonderful outdoor spaces we have in the Wairarapa. Whether you walk, cycle or just picnic with a glass of Wairarapa wine in hand, let’s make the most of our green spaces in Park Week and all year around.”
