Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is conducting a programme of resurfacing in February and March that will
involve several sections of State Highway 2 and State Highway 53 in Wairarapa. Road users should allow extra time for their journeys while this work is underway to keep our highways safe and in good condition.

Summer resurfacing season
Waka Kotahi’s Wellington Transport Alliance (WTA) has resurfaced sections of Chapel Street, Masterton, with asphalt in January and early February. The February schedule also includes night-time asphalt resurfacing in Carterton, north of the central business district.

In late February and early March, chipseal will be laid on 9 mostly rural sites near Greytown, Featherston and north of Masterton.

In mid-March, Kitchener Street in Martinborough will be resurfaced with asphalt.

Works are usually undertaken at night in busy areas. The lighter traffic flow at night allows us to avoid lengthy, disruptive traffic delays and means the job can be completed quicker and more efficiently than if it was done during the daytime. Works can be undertaken during the daytime in places where traffic is lighter.

Asphalt resurfacing in Martinborough

In mid-March, WTA will resurface 500 metres of Kitchener Street to Memorial Square in Martinborough with asphalt over a period of 5 days. Traffic will detour through nearby streets to avoid the works on most of those days, with stop/go traffic control through the site on 1 day.

How to drive through roadwork sites

People should allow extra time for their journeys, look out for roadwork signs and slow down as they approach worksites. Please follow the instructions of traffic controllers. They are there to keep you safe – stop on request and obey temporary slower speed limits. The lower speed limits are there to keep you and our workers safe, and to protect the new surface and your vehicle.

Laying chipseal is usually a single day operation but requires several days of aftercare at a 30km speed limit to ensure the chip is bedded in. Asphalt resurfacing is a more complex operation but the road can be driven on at the usual speed once the work is finished.
