Return of Kāinga Ora public housing to Greytown

[Media release from Kāinga Ora]

Kāinga Ora has currently purchased two sites in Greytown and Woodville and have signed contracts with Jenninan Homes and Westwood properties to acquire housing in Masterton.

Greg Groufsky, Regional Director Greater Wellington Region, outlined how these homes will make a difference for people and families in need, with these agreements seeing around 50 much needed public homes created for the region, with many more in the pipeline.

Minister Woods visited the Jennian Homes Masterton development alongside iwi, local officials and Kāinga Ora people to mark this significant progress with bringing Kāinga Ora housing to the region.

“With the growing need for housing in Wairarapa and Tararua, we are committed to re-establishing public housing presence, ensuring everyone has security and a place to call home,” said Greg

Partnership has been crucial for bringing these opportunites to life.

“Kāinga Ora has been working closely with local councils, iwi and developers to investigate a range of housing opportunities in the area, and it’s a great example of organisations working together to deliver housing for our communities.”” said Greg.

These conversations led to the recent purchase of three small development sites in Woodville.

Horizons Corporate and Governance Group Manager, Craig Grant says “previously the land had been used as storage for our Woodville Service Centre and has now been earmarked to bring around nine new, warm and dry public homes to the region.”

“With 237 people on the Housing register in Masterton, South Wairarapa and Tararua region, Horizons is really pleased we have helped to facilitate new public housing in our area”.

Currently all sites will have public housing to help meet demand in the region.
