A reminder that State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill will close on one night during January 2023. The January date is Wednesday 18 January 9pm to 4am.

Please note that the January and April dates have changed from the annual schedule published in August. Waka Kotahi have cancelled the Sunday 9 January closure that was in the previously published schedule.

Light vehicles can be escorted at intervals across the hill behind a pilot vehicle. Bookings are essential and should be made in advance with customer@wta.nzta.govt.nz.

Waka Kotahi cannot offer crossings of the Remutaka Hill during these maintenance closures unless a traveller has special circumstances and has booked.

Numbers are strictly limited and travellers turning up without a booking risk being turned away or having to wait at the closure point until the road opens. Any additions to an escorted crossing are at the discretion of the hill manager on duty who must consider the safety of workers and travellers on the night.

Access will be available for ‘flashing light’ emergency services throughout the closures.

Waka Kotahi understand the closures may inconvenience some road users and thank you for your patience and understanding as they carry out this essential maintenance work.

These regular night closures significantly reduce the number of disruptions at other times for road users. Road crews can complete a large amount of work safely during these closures because multiple crews can work across the hill simultaneously without disrupting traffic.
