Councillor Paora Ammunson has today confirmed his resignation from South Wairarapa District Council.

In his resignation letter, Mr Ammunson shared his “considerable regret” and “heavy heart” about making the decision.

Following a work promotion, Mr Ammunson stated that he had found it increasingly hard to meet the demands of both roles and family commitments.

Mr Ammunson said, “I have had some big life changes occur and am no longer able to commit to the role, to the level I would like to,” said Mr Ammunson.

Mr Ammunson shared his positive experience of working with the Mayor, fellow councillors and SWDC management, as well as his willingness to continue working with Council on any future iwi and Māori matters.

Mr Ammunson said, “I just can no longer continue to commit regular and consistent amounts of time to Council and community”.

South Wairarapa Mayor Viv Napier says, “I am very grateful to Mr Ammunson for his contribution to Council over his time with us. I have always appreciated his wise and pragmatic approach, particularly with regards to Māori community engagement.

“We live in a small community and so I am certain we will continue to work with Mr Ammunson in one way or another. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” says Viv Napier.

Ammunson was elected councillor in October 2016 and leaves ten months before the end of his term. Councillors will discuss whether to fill the position at the next Council meeting on 20 February 2019. A by-election is not permitted as it is less than one year until the next local council elections, which will be held on 12 October 2019.
